Hidden Treasures Around Your Home

By Victor Epand

I live in a small town surrounded by a vast number of farms. Yes, it’’s the country; call me a hick if you like, but country living has benefits that city dwellers can”t even imagine. One of the great benefits of the country living is the nundreds or yard sales, garage sales, and flea markets we have in our town, spanning from late April through to late Spetember. Every weekend, on every street, at least one person has cleaned out their attic or garage and is trying to make a little cash on items they have seldom if ever used. The beauty of this is, a lot of people don”t know what they have; they think it is just junk, but to those of us with an eye for the unique, we soon find out it is treasure.

There is a fine art to yard sale techniques. You can”t just glance through the stuff; you have to take your time. You have to inspect items for authenticity. And how do you do that you ask? You research and learn to look for signatures and trade marks. Now once you find an item of worth, you can”t let the seller know its true value. If they have a $5 price, tell them you will give them $4. If thye have it in their yard sale, thye don”t know what they have, so put on the poker face and bargain with them for the price.

Yard sales are always full of collectibles and again if a seller has it on their lawn to sell, they don”t know what they have. If you come across a box of autographed trading cards that sell for 25 cents a piece, offer them five dollars of the whole box. I can almost guarentee within that box will be the treassure you are looking for. I have many times, so I am sure you can. Rookie baseball cards, rookie football cards; there is a gold mine out there just in trading cards.

When it comes to flea markets it is a little trickier. Many of the vendors will know what they have a play dumb. What have you got to watch for at flea markets are the fakes and the replicas. You have to be educated in the value of certain items before trying to bargain with a flea marketer. For example if you come across a vendor who has a baseball card autographed by Reggie Jackson he will have it priced for $50-$100. But the question for you is it a steal or is it a fake? I can assure you it is a fake. An autographed baseball card from Reggie Jackson would sell for at least $500 and the flea market vendor knows this and is trying to take advantage of you. He is banking on the fact that you will be fooled, so your most important task is not to get fooled by the vendor and ensure that whenever you buy autographed celebrity cards from the flea market they are original.

A Quick History of the Drums

By Matt Chang

Percussion instruments are perhaps the oldest type of musical instruments in history. The voice, of course, was probably the first instrument, with percussion coming in as a close second. When you think about the drum and percussion, in it’’s rural beginnings, you may think of tribal beats from Africa, and maybe the Polynesias.

The term ”percussion” comes from the Latin terms ”percussion” and ”percussus”, roughly translates to the beating of something with another object; it can be the sound created by clapping hands, beating sticks, logs, rocks or anything else that emits a noise or creates an audible vibration once struck. In modern time, when you hear the word percussion, the drum probably comes to mind. Percussion instruments have come a long way from their beginnings to create complex and enjoyable sounds that become an integral part of the layering and texture of music today.

The drum is perhaps one of the earliest inventions of the percussion instruments. Originally, the drum was comprised of hollowed out logs of trees. You may have seen versions at luaus. Eventually, the drum came to be a hollowed out stump with a leather skin stretched over it. In Eastern countries the drum was used in meditation practice, and in the South Pacific, the drums were used in ceremonial chants and dances. For many, the importance of the drum was to create rhythmic patterns. These rhythmic patterns are the back bone of music.

As the back bone of a musical composition, the drums may not be recognized as crucial or the top of mind when you think about modern day music, but for musicians, it is recognized that the drummer, and the bass player are really the core of the band. They may not be the ones that the crowd is cheering for, but they are the people that keep everything grounded. A group with a bad drummer is not a group very long…or a successful group very long.

Percussion Instruments have been used all throughout history, which is evident when studying what instruments people used in the past. And, while the drum may be mainly focused to some popular uses like traditional Rock, and Jazz, the drum is still prominent in Japanese culture, military marching, and tribal cultures. The next time you are enjoying your favorite cd, ask yourself what makes it so good. You may realize that the drums have alot to do with it.

The American Platinum Eagle Coins Are Unique

By Victor Epand

It is no wonder that some special coins are so popular with collectors around the world. In fact, the number of people who are interested in the collection of coins is astonishingly high. The attraction increases when it is a special series like the American platinum eagle coins. You may wonder what differences are there from other popular special coins like the American Silver Eagle coin and the special gold coins.

There the specialty is that on every change each year, the design features an entirely new look. On the reverse or back side, there is a bald eagle with different regions of America. The obverse side or front side of the coin features the powerful and striking image of the “Lady Liberty” as she is looking into the future, which symbolizes vigilance, faithfulness to duty, and the spirit and character of Americans. This marvelous creation on these rare coins was designed and engraved by famous sculptor and engraver John M. Mercanti.

These astonishing rare coins bear the inscription “Liberty” and the mottos, “In God We Trust”, and “E Pluribus Unum”, which are also on the obverse along with their date of issue. Within the curve located at the bottom of these coins you will find the face value and the West Point “W” mint mark, which is also found on the obverse.

On the reverse side of these rare coins, the design features a bald eagle soaring across a setting sun within different regions of America, which changes each year with the release of that year’’s coins. Watching over our firm foundation of democracy is the bald eagle, the nation’’s symbol of power, courage, and freedom, which was shown in different designs between the years of 1998 and 2002 known as the “Vistas of Liberty” series.

The American Silver Eagle coins were released on 24 November 1986. One major peculiarity of the silver coin is that silver eagle coin is offered in only one denomination. That is the one ounce size. The face value is $1 and its diameter is 1.598 inches.

These rare coins were given a face value of $1 to protect it from existing counterfeiting laws and this value was low enough to ensure they would never actually circulate in the money market. The small face value also holds sentimental appeal to those who remember the circulating silver dollars of long ago.

The American Silver Eagle Coins are also known as American Eagle Silver Bullion Coins. They are true collectibles as the weight, content, and purity are guaranteed by the United States government.

Gold coins, minted in the United States and Europe, are becoming the choice collectible coins in the world. It is particularly so in the case of coins minted before 1933. Every day the media comes to you with the attractions of the bullion. That is reported to be the best way to offset risk, and to combat inflation.

Another advantage of the gold coins is that they are historically important and artistically beautiful. Often they are regarded as perfect works of art. Some peculiar gold coins are the $20 gold Double Eagle, first minted in 1907, and featuring an impressive image of Liberty striding gloriously out of dawn.

So the world of special coins is out there beckoning you to its several attractions.

The Unique Features of Figurines Like Doulton Figurines

By Victor Epand

Very often you have come across collectibles. You might also have wondered about their history and price range as well. Among the collectibles, figurines have carved a niche and in that Royal Doulton figurines have a special position. It is worthwhile to learn a few things about them. That will help you when you plan to buy some or make a gift of them to someone.

From home products to exquisite giftware, there is something here for everyone. The figurine collection itself consists of thousands of designs and they are popular the world over. Every figurine features significant, intricate details that are loved and cherished by innumerable collectors.

The company began in England in 1815, producing stoneware bottles and sewer pipes. In course of time, the product line changed with the times and began producing tableware and collectibles. Then the production of figurines began. However, the process by which a figurine is created has not changed much since then. From the sketch phase to the final painted details, the figurines require a team of experts all of whom possess an exceptional eye for detail.

One of the most popular figurine lines is known as the Pretty Ladies collection. They feature various types of women in elegant attire, many Victorian-inspired. Other pieces include characters such as the Balloon Man and Nurse, and mini-figurines. The animal, holiday and musical ornament figurines are also available. Another significant part of the figurine line is the Disney Showcase, featuring replicas of princesses, fairies and loveable characters.

The Bunnykins collection is a great starting point for children. The earliest Bunnykins character was drawn in 1934 by Sister Mary Barbara Vernon, daughter of the factory manager at the time. Five years later, the first figurine was released, modeled by Charles Noke, a renowned artist. Bunnykins pieces are available in figurines, collectibles and tableware, including dishes, silverware, and cups.

By joining the International Collectors Club, collectors receive a free figurine and have the opportunity to purchase exclusive pieces. A bridal registry is available to help new and avid collectors increase their inventory. This service is free of charge and allows gift-givers the opportunity to make valuable contributions to a collection without any fear of making a duplicate, rather expensive, purchase.

Every design begins with an idea, brought to life by master modelers. Once a sample model has been constructed, it is passed on to the molder, who produces moulds in a variety of shapes and sizes. The bone china is poured into the moulds, where it sits to dry until each piece is ready to be assembled, and the figurine is then subject to a series of firings before being painted or sprayed by a professional artist. The entire process can take anywhere from several months to a year to complete.

Now you have seen the time, effort and care that go into the making of each figurine. So if you buy one, it is in fact your way of expressing solidarity with a noble line of artistry. It will also enrich your drawing room, beckoning you and your guests into the world of dreams and imagination.

Visit Online Hobby Shops for a Variety of Rc Planes

By Victor Epand

You may be fascinated with the idea of flying RC planes but you wonder where you can get a good model to fit your requirements. But getting these planes is not a problem anymore. There was a time when in traditional shopping products were available only at brick and mortar shops. Today, there are numerous online hobby shops where one can easily order and buy any products including RC model planes.

You may also be worried about losing your money. The level of technology is changing and much has been done to prevent such kind of problems. Online shops use drop shipping facilities, a supply chain management where a retailer sells goods to customers without having to stock them. The retailer does so by giving order details to the wholesalers and the wholesalers ship the goods directly to the customer.

And so the difference between wholesaler price and the retailer price is what the retailer gets as his profit. The shops may also have direct sales where you order and the company ships it to you. There are safe paying options available like Paypal, which is fool proof, and you can recover your money in case of failure to deliver.

There are many online shops on the web, but they are based in many countries. There are of course some of these shops which run the international market and if you can easily locate the ones based in your country, then try them, they are equally reliable. There are shops that are based in various countries and have websites where they sell their products.

For example, if you are in Canada and US, you can contact Brookhurst Hobbies which is a US importer and distributor for items like RC planes. For those in France, Quirao Pechbonnieu offers good deals in electronic items, especially gift items. If you are in Germany, Andromeda is an online shop that will give you good deals especially if you are buying kits. In India also you will find shops and agencies which distribute RC model planes. These are just examples, but there are thousands of online shops worldwide which will give you good deals and services.

But before placing the order, you should do two important things. First you should know what kind of model you want to buy. For the novice, Park flyer and trainers are ideal. Then there are glow plug engines and sailplane aircraft for those who have advanced more. For the expert pilots, there are jets, pylon racers, autogyros, helicopters, 3D aircraft, and other top notch planes. Secondly, you should read the previews available on the model you intend to buy to know and compare prices.

Catfishing the Right But Simple Way

By Uchenna Ani-Okoye

There are a few basic methods that are effective in catching catfish. Bear in mind that specific methods are applicable to specific kinds of waters. That is because techniques and baiting mixtures are formulated for specific targets.

The following methods are simple, yet proven successful when used:

1) Rigging method - Depending on the bait used, loop the bait holder or the treble hook from a line to a preferred distance to the end. Bait movement is not suggested; therefore, a weight must be used to allow the rig to be still. A good distance shall be about 18″ to 24.”

Same as the first method, using the Slipweight to make the bait stable is also effective. The weight does not matter as long as it can slide in the line. The fish will not feel any weight and it will be late until they realize that the bait isn”t real.

Multi-bait technique allows multiple catches at once. Simply place three-way swivel along the line. As it draws more strikes it makes a great choice for catching more catfish at the same time.

2) Bait - Experts opt for chicken livers or medium sized shrimp from groceries. The shrimp’’s tail and skin must be removed and body should be big enough to slide up in a number 6 hook. This is simpler than the chicken which necessitates the use of pantyhose. A diameter of a quarter is wrapped in a piece of pantyhose leaving a tag end then attaches it through the treble hook. Blood worms, minnows, catfish paste, night crawlers, snails, living or dead small fish, and dough baits are also good choices of baits. Remember that the best baits are always those that nature produced.

3) Chumming - Fishermen catch more catfish with this method. This is simply throwing balls of mixtures of natural recipes in the fishing area. This attracts more catfish; the trick is that the mixture should be right enough for the catfish to feed heavily. The hook that will be used to fish normally must have the same recipe for the bait. Adding a good smelling flavour into the pasty mixture attracts catfish more.

4) Tackling - Although the technique involved in this method is by far effective, it’’s still the bait that attracts and brings the catfish in. As simple as it is, the tackle should be about 6 feet long with a spinning real. Choose heavier lines to allow more battle between the fisherman and the catfish. It doesn”t necessarily have to be expensive. The experience you get from a cheaper tackle is no different from an expensive one.

Make sure the grip is secure hooks are removed by pliers after catching the fish. Avoid being stuck with the fins as some are poisonous. Just simply sliding the hand up to its belly from tail, placing the fingers behind one side and thumb behind the other can remove the catfish from the hook without any harm. Happy catfishing and good luck!

Model Helicopters You Can Fly

By Victor Epand

Flying radio controlled Helicopters is more difficult and challenges the flying enthusiast in more ways than a radio-controlled airplane does. You need to put in a lot of practice but the rewards are worth the effort. Most pilots or beginners prefer to train on a simulator or seek an instructor to learn flying. Radio controlled helicopters are expensive and nobody would want to risk a crash on their maiden flight. It is recommended that beginners check out the helicopter ground school to learn more.

Radio controlled helicopters are available as ”full kit” in which very few parts are assembled and in kits with almost 90% or more parts assembled. Some kits have the helicopter assembled excluding only the radio and the engine, while other kits have the engine, gyro and radio assembled. It is recommended that you look for a package deal that includes the radio, engine and gyro, as this is the best setup for a beginner.

Nitro gas powered remote controlled helicopters make a very realistic sound and are preferred over electric powered ones. Also the nitro-powered helicopters can be flown for longer durations; all you need is to fill in more gas. On the other hand electric powered helicopters will fly for 8 to 10 minutes before loosing power. You need to have an additional pack of batteries or have to recharge the batteries.

The only advantage the electric powered helicopters have over the nitro gas fired helicopters is that they are super quiet. In case you intend to fly often in areas that have noise restrictions then the electric powered helicopter is the best option otherwise stick to the nitro gas powered model. The Mini Electric RC helicopter is ideal for indoor and year round flying.

The Reflex XTR ”Next to Reality” Flight Simulator or Radio Control Dave Brown RCFS 2001 Flight Simulator is a cost effective way for beginners to learn to fly a radio controlled helicopter. Crashing model helicopters is an expensive proposition and flight simulators will pay for themselves in the first 30 seconds of use. Simulators closely mimic the real conditions and helps new pilots learn how to react to the controls.

Some people want to get started with the real thing and are not interested in simulators such people should consider the .30 size radio controlled helicopter as it is relatively inexpensive along with the repair kits.

Some models, which are recommended for beginners, are Dark Knight RC Electric RTR Helicopter, Radio Control * Thunder Tiger Raptor V.2 RTF Helicopter 49 BB Pro Mod Engine-TTR 4839-A11. These helicopters are belt driven and are more precise than helicopters that have torque rod driven tail rotors. Performing 3D maneuvers is easy with belt driven tail rotors.

Start with the Raptor 50 model and when you have gained some experience try the Radio Control*Thunder Tiger Raptor 50 High Performance Helicopter Kit w/ Engine- TTR 4851 K 11 which is slightly bigger and expensive. It has a larger rotor disc; parts are compatible with the Raptor 30. it is more powerful and has a real cool muffler. However the Raptor 50 is worth the investment.

How To Make Your Own Corsage

By Jimmy Cox

Flowers not only beautify our surroundings, but have a great tendency to lift our spirit and brighten our appearance if we wear them. They are a principle accent in our attire for many occasions. A bride would look empty handed without her bouquet. There is a special glow in the eyes of a teenager when she receives her first corsage from a beau.

We need not always wait for an occasion to wear flowers. A dewy gardenia, bought on the spur of the moment can brighten an entire evening.

Corsages may be divided into two groups: Formal and Informal. Each has its place.

An informal corsage consists of a spray or two of flowers without floral tape or bow. This type is worn during daytime activities.

A formal corsage usually has a bow and is always taped. It is worn at formal affairs, holiday celebrations, and other gala occasions throughout the year.

To be a successful corsage maker, you must learn the proper procedure.

Though a rose in itself is one of the most beautiful creations in the world, here is a way to further enhance its beauty by fashioning it with several of its kind into an ornamental work of art.

This project calls for the use of seven roses. You may, however, use anywhere from five to nine.

Cut the roses in the morning and put them in water to the calyx. Keep them in the refrigerator on the second shelf to harden them up.

Roses may be selected from the garden, keeping in mind that the buds are the beginnings of the corsage, with a gradual gradation in size toward the center, which is a full open rose. Nature grows her roses with this same gradation. After making your choice of roses, select some of the foliage to set off the corsage. If you can not find the right sizes, you may make fuller roses by gently peeling back the petals at the bases, being careful not to bruise or tear them.

Procedure for making rose corsage

A - Select the roses

B - Remove stems just below the calyx. Cut some number twenty four wires in halves. Insert one end into the calyx of a rose and pull through to other side. Twist wires together, after bending them down away from the rose. This preparation provides a flexible and sturdy stem with which to work. An additional half wire may be used to strengthen the stem.

C - Taping. These procedures cover up the wiring process and leaves a smooth neat finish on the stem.
Select three perfect rose leaves; holding them stem inward against the calyx and starting with a small collar of tape, gently turn the rose and wrap the tape tightly and firmly around the stem with a downward motion.
Pipe cleaners may also be used as stems. Cut the rose in this case, to the base of the calyx, leaving no stem. Insert pipe cleaner upward into the center of the calyx. Tape on rose foliage.

D - Roses numbered one, two and three are grouped together making two separate units. Do not crowd the foliage. Next attach the full open rose, number four, to your upper unit. Attach the lower unit; completing the corsage.

If you would like to add a ribbon, place it in the focal point which in this design is the center of the corsage. The ribbon is an accenting feature. It should add, not detract from the beauty of the roses, be careful to select your ribbon colors to contrast pleasantly with the color of the corsage.

As a finishing touch, sprinkle a little water on the roses. This will give them a garden fresh, dewy appearance. Be careful not to wet the ribbon.
Now you can wear your beautiful corsage with pride.
