Cutting Corners On Hip Replacements

By Thomas Pretty

Private health insurance is a huge buffer for those who suffer hip problems. This is one of the body’’s largest joints and as such, has a wide range of movement and also bears the brunt of the biggest stresses. Constant pressure is put on this joint and as such it is one of the first to wear away, along with knees. Hip replacement operations are a common occurrence on the National Health Service but, as with many operations, there can be a bit of a wait, unless you have health insurance that is willing to pay for the operation when you need it.

A deterioration of the hip joint is usually a gradual process, often over several years due to wear and tear in old age and conditions such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. But it can also be due to trauma such as fracture of the thigh bone or damage resulting in loss of blood to the head of the femur.

At first, it is an issue of pain management but with hip joints that are wearing, patients will eventually get to the point of needing a replacement joint. This particular operation has been very welcome for the sufferers and is one of the great advancements of modern medicine for bringing quality of life to patients. According to the NHS direct website on the matter, at least 50,000 total hip replacements are carried out every year.

That said, it is a major operation and doctors are trying to minimise the impact by carrying out resurfacing operations as opposed to complete joint replacements. This is a useful way of providing immediate relief for the patient but is nowhere near as long lasting as hip replacement. In fact, recent figures suggest you would be quite lucky to get three years out of a hip resurfacing operation.

This involves coating the worn bone with metal plating and is done to try and reduce the trauma that patients suffer when going through major operations such as full hip replacement. Once only available through the finances of health insurance it is now more widely available on the NHS but is there much point if you have to go through it more than once? Full hip replacements are normally long term fixes for worn, extremely painful hip joints.

One patient who tried the hip resurfacing operation was left sorely disappointed. The sixty year old man had heard of this procedure in its early days and, through his health insurance, was able to go ahead with the operation. However, within five weeks the bone had re-fractured, landing him in hospital once again where the NHS carried out a full hip replacement for him. It’’s possible that this man was just unlucky as no medical care is completely fail proof but advancements in modern medicine hope to reduce the chances of this happening.

These hip operations also coincide with the partial knee joint operations that are replacing full replacements. According to The Times, the current understanding is that one in seventy five of these partial operations will fail and that’’s a fairly high chance. Until these odds can be narrowed further, then the best bet is to keep up to date with your health insurance and if you should ever find yourself in need of medical care, at least you will have options open to you.

Maintaining Eyesight - Protect Yourself

By john mce

Do you squint when reading from your computer screen? Do numbers and letters seem to phase in and out from time to time? Do you find it hard to focus? If so, you are probably experiencing deterioration of your eyesight. Eyes are often neglected by people and their eyesight often deteriorates prematurely as a result of this neglect. Here are a few tips to keeping your eyes healthy for longer and avoiding cataract operations later in life.

Stop Smoking
Smoking cigarettes can be very bad for your eyes, not to mention your heart, lungs and social life. A recent article in Reuters Health Information states that smoking increases the risk of developing cataracts, clouding the lens and impairing vision. If you stop smoking you have a far reduced risk of developing cataracts in later life, but only some of the damage done to your eye by smoking cigarettes is reversible. Give up, and if you don”t smoke, don”t start.

A study found that men who quit smoking had a 23% reduced risk of cataract diagnosis and a 28% reduced risk for cataract removal compared with those who carried on smoking.

Using computers on a daily basis, is probably more strenuous on eyes than any other part of the body. The most common complaints are eye fatigue, eyestrain, eye irritation and blurred vision. Computer users often complain of tired, burning, itchy or watery eyes, headaches, flickering sensations and an inability to focus.

UV Rays
Exposure to UV, whether from the sun’’s rays or from fluorescent lights within a work place, causes eye damage. From a young age, children should be encouraged to wear sunglasses with a UV protection factor of 30 or above. UV exposure is the leading cause of cataracts.

Eye Strain
Eye strain can be caused by reading when tired, stress, glare on computer screens, bad posture and tiredness. The symptoms are headaches, blurry vision, sore, itchy or burning eyes. You can ease eye strain by placing your hands over your eyes or splashing them with cold water.

Eye Exercise
Like any muscle in the body, the eyes need to be regularly exercised to keep them healthy. Here are a few things you can do on a daily basis which may help:

-Roll your eyes from side to side
-Close your eyes for three seconds, and then open them for three seconds. Repeat.
-Switch between focusing on an item that is close by for three seconds, and then an item which is far away for three seconds.
-Blink regularly and try not to stay focused on one thing for long periods.

What The Best Natural Anti-Aging Eye Creams Do

By Brue Baker

As far as the physical signs of aging go, the face is the area where it shows the most. And within your face, the areas around your eyes are often the most prone to the aging process because they don”t have any fat cells or moisturizing glands. If always looking your best concerns you, don”t worry, because there are natural anti-aging eye creams that can help the appearance of the area around your eyes.

Get Creams Specifically Made For Your Eyes

Most of the best anti-aging creams are made for your whole face, but if your eyes look baggy, tired, or surrounded by wrinkles your anti-aging results won”t be complete. A good natural anti-aging cream will not only provide elasticity to your eyelids and the areas under and around the eyes, but it will also make your skin blend into the rest of your face.

That is why if you are serious about looking younger you need an anti-aging cream that focuses strictly on the area around your eyes. Make sure you keep using your other natural creams to reduce the signs of aging on the other areas of your face.

Wear Sunglasses

Although you need to spend ten minutes a day in the sun without sunglasses on (vitamin D is absorbed through your eyes), wearing sunglasses the rest of the time you are exposed to the sun can protect your skin from ultraviolet light damage. This is important as the aging effects of the sun are hard to cover up or improve upon once they are there.

Other Things Anti-Aging Eye Creams Can Help With

While some people may have smooth and shiny skin around their eyes, they might have dark circles that make-up can”t hide. Using the best anti-aging creams can bring color and life back to your skin. On top of that, if you have that unsightly sagging around your eyes, the best natural anti-aging eye creams should be able to tighten your skin in that area.

You know those tiny wrinkles at the corners of your eyes? They are known as crows feet, and they are one of the most common signs of aging among most people experience. However, they are controllable with the right anti-aging eye cream.

Use Common Sense

Obviously there is more to preventing the signs of aging than using an eye cream. Diet and exercise play a large role because how you treat your body and what you put into your body show on the outside. For shiny and smooth skin a diet of mostly organic fruits and vegetables along with at least 30 minutes of exercise a day is recommended.

Also, the results of the anti-aging cream will not be permanent so you will need to keep using the product and follow the advice in the previous paragraph to see consistent results. Yes it takes work to eat healthy and exercise. And it does cost money to buy anti-aging eye cream each month, but it is all a lot healthier and cheaper than getting botox or other types of cosmetic surgery. Good luck on your journey towards health and wellness!

Getting A Good Night Of Sleep with CPAP Machines

By Andy West

Sleep apnea is characterized as a sleeping disorder in which a person ceases to breath at various intervals during the sleep. This dangerous sleeping disorder can remain undetected for quite some time. Usually, sleep apnea is recognized by others who witness the sleeping episodes. Fortunately for those with this problem, there are some solutions. A continuous positive airway pressure machine has been developed that presses air through the throat of the sleeping person. This machine has been found to be very effective and can help alleviate some of the adverse daytime side effects of sleep apnea.

Basically, a sleep apnea machine opens the sleeper’’s airway with pressurized air through the throat. These masks and machines are not like ventilators. The machines are used only to aid sleepers and give slight pressure when the sleeper ceases to breathe. Unlike a ventilator, CPAP machines create positive pressure while opening the airways. The machine will push the air into the lungs during obstruction to prevent sleep apnea. The apparatus is mainly used at home, and is recommended every night.

As the muscles relax during sleep, the throat of a person with sleep apnea will narrow. When this happen, oxygen in the blood is significantly reduced causing the person to wake. This piece of equipment keeps this from happening by sending a pressurized stream of compressed air through the nose. This keeps the airway unobstructed and allows easier breathing. The machines have been amazingly successful in reducing or preventing sleep apnea, as well as the loud snoring that usually accompanies the sleep disorder.

Some sleep apnea sufferers will begin seeing immediate results after the first night’’s use. However, it is not uncommon for users to take time to adjust to the new machine. The contraption looks uncomfortable and breathing on the machine can be difficult for some people. Different candidates differ on their difficulty adjusting to the machine; while some discontinue treatment entirely. There have been some studies that show that cognitive behavioral therapy can help with the adjustment period and keep sleepers at ease with the new equipment.

The custom masks are fitted to each individual face. Finding the correct size is imperative for the machine to fully function. It must create a tight seal around the nose and mouth, or the machine will not have the full effect. CPAP masks are available in many different shapes and comfort levels. They can be made with gel cushions, air cushions, and other comfortable yet fitting materials. They can also come in a smaller nasal mask form that just fits the nose.

There are three main components to CPAP machines: the flow generator, the hose, and the interface. The flow generator is the part of the machine that supplies the compressed air. The compressed air travels through the hose to the interface. The hose is sometimes rigged with a humidifier to help reduce some of the adverse effects of dry compressed air. The interface is the nasal or full face mask. This provides the connection to the sleeper’’s airway. Some interfaces even include a lip-seal mouthpiece to prevent the sleeper from breathing through their mouth.

Sleep apnea machines also offer several optional pieces that can help make the process more comfortable for users. A humidifier moistens the air and can help alleviate the discomfort of dry compressed air. A ramp is another optional feature that temporarily lowers air pressure to help the sleeper fall asleep. Another option is the exhalation pressure relief, which adjusts the pressure during exhalation. Finally, flexible chin straps can be added to help keep the candidate from breathing through the mouth.

As with any medical equipment, proper maintenance is essential for proper functioning. Keeping the appliance clean and free from debris is also imperative for full utility. In most cases, this instrument is only available by prescription, and candidates will need to undergo a sleep lab before treatment can start. Nonetheless, the use of CPAP machines can significantly reduce or eliminate sleep apnea.

Doctor, Doctor, Give Me Arthritis Pain Relief!

By Clydette Clayton

Arthritis is nature’’s way of reminding us ”baby-boomers” that we now have some body parts that could use more TLC than they required when we were ”in our youth”.

Seeking out a doctor who will likely confirm that our joints are aging is not necessarily something that is going to increase our self-esteem. But it may give you an idea of what to expect.

Let’’s take a look at what you might anticipate when you decide to go for medical treatment.

What To Expect
First visit, new doctor: An orthopedic doctor will inform you of the ups and downs of your pain. He”ll remind you, too, that you”re not as young as you used to be. (Having a good time, yet?)

Probably, the doc will suggest that you adjust your life-style. He will want some testing just to be sure that ”he’’s sure” before delivering a diagnosis to you.

Now, you can ask ”Why” but you may not get an answer. Doctors just order the Tests. It’’s their job! Maybe you”ll get the results at a later visit.

Your Examination
Doctor’’s strategy: Prescription medication to alleviate your pain first. He already knows that you really hurt or you would not be visiting him!

He will, no doubt, lay down the law. Keep that sore joint moving, no matter what it takes. ”Resting” it only adds to your chances of needing more appointments.

Remember, you decided to see the doctor to make things better!

Your Treatment Plan
Here’’s a doctor’’s common treatment plan for your pain to get better.

1) Reduce the inflammation in the painful joint. (That medicine he gave you does this.) This”ll get you to succeed with step 2.

2) Go to physical therapy to hurt some more so your pained back, knee shoulder, etc. can be whipped back into functioning as well as it can.

Then therapists take the doctor’’s orders. They design an exercise program to fit your diagnosis. You keep at these tasks for about a month.

Therapists call or fax the physician so he can decide if therapy is helping you or not. And back you go to the doctor to start all over again.

The Moral Of Your Story
You finally realize you are in charge of your pain if you want to get rid of it. The doctor visit, diagnosis, and therapy are just steps in a process.

Conservative action may be all you need to ease that cranky joint problem. A reputable specialist would consider more drastic treatment only if you had
little pain relief.

Recovery, under your control, increases self-esteem rather than diminishing it! A positive attitude keeps you feeling young!

Reduce Your Stress By Eating Right

By Paul Hata

You may notice that you reach for the potato chips when a television program becomes particularly frightening. Or you grab the crackers at work when you learn that you”ll have to handle a new project. You may also nibble on candy bars when you”re having difficulty controlling your children. These eating patterns are all a reaction to stress.

Stress plays an important part in our daily diet. In fact, a great deal of overeating has been attributed to stress. However, it is also true that your diet can have an impact on stress. There are certain foods that tend to worsen our stress levels. A number of these foods fall into the category of stimulants.

Of course, the best-known stimulant is caffeine. You”ll find it not only in coffee, but in soft drinks, tea, and chocolate. Your heart beat races, as does your mind, when you are served a significant amount of caffeine. Caffeine consumption may even be connected to high blood pressure. However, you might not want to cut out caffeine entirely all at once. A gradual reduction will help lessen your withdrawal symptoms.

Consuming alcohol can also increase your stress level. It leads to the production of adrenaline, which can cause you to have difficulty sleeping. You might also experience a feeling of tension as a result of your alcohol intake. In addition, alcohol makes it more difficult for the body to get rid of toxins. Smoking is also quite dangerous, increasing hypertension and leading to heart disease.

Chances are you will experience a great deal of stress after eating sugar. This is because this sweet substance can exhaust the adrenal glands, leading to depression and irritability. While some people tend to reach for sugar cookies when they are feeling stressed, the irony is that sugar-filled snacks can actually make you feel even more stressed out.

Salt and fat are two substances that can increase your stress level. Salt, for instance, raises the blood pressure, causing an individual to feel as if his or her emotions are out of control. As a result, you should not eat high-salt foods such as ham or sausage. Meanwhile, consuming fat can put strain on the cardiovascular system, leading to more stress. In general, you should avoid highly processed food, which tends to be sparse in nutritional value.

If you want to get your stress level under control, consider a diet that is rich in whole foods, fruits, and vegetables. These are natural stress-busters, filled with nutrients that will help you to feel good over the long run. Also, these foods are far less likely to result in weight gain another significant cause of stress. Some dieticians recommend eating a diet that is 65 to 70 percent raw in order to ensure that you receive the maximum amount of nutrients which could be otherwise lost during the cooking process.

How do you know if your diet is stressing you out? Pay close attention to the warning signs. For instance, do you get headaches right after eating? Are you experiencing neck or back pain? Do you feel irritable after dinner? Do you feel anxious for no reason? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you could be dealing with food-induced stress. As you attempt to combat that stress, you should also make sure that you get at least seven hours of sleep each night in order to ensure that you are well-rested. Being tired can contribute significantly to your stress level.

There is no question that eating right can reduce your stress. Indulging in caffeine-filled drinks or fatty foods can simply make you hyper, unable to relax or to concentrate. However, if you eat meals that are rich in vitamins and minerals, you could find your stress level significantly reduced.

Plan your meals ahead of time to ensure that you receive the maximum nutrition. Be sure to eat slowly and deliberately feeling rushed at mealtime can contribute to your stress level. The good news is diet is a stressor you can easily control. By following a few common sense techniques, you can ensure that you are eating a diet which will greatly reduce your stress.

Release Your Stress With Music

By Paul Hata

Music - It is the soundtrack to our lives. You might have driven your first car while the Go-Gos blared on the radio. You may remember singing the song Memory at your high school graduation, or you might have had the organist play Ode to Joy at your wedding. You may remember the first time you heard Bruce Springsteen, or the last time you heard Madonna. Whether your musical tastes are contemporary or classical, chances are you do have a favorite form of music. And you also probably have a favorite artist or band.

But, in addition to being enjoyable, music can serve an important function as a stress reliever. It is no surprise that dentists routinely play music in their offices, or that surgeons play it during operations. Bus drivers play music to reduce stress, as do baseball players during their warm-ups.

Musicologists say that music can have a soothing effect, an effect that might have begun when we first heard music while still in our mother’’s womb. As a result, music may, in fact, remind us of our mothers, from whom we draw strength and comfort. It has been shown in studies that music where the flute predominates, such as Celtic or Native American music, is often the most comforting. In fact, research indicates that any music performed in person helps to synchronize the right and left brain hemispheres. Music can be especially beneficial to the individuals performing it. It provides a sense of accomplishment which can, in turn, reduce stress.

Music increases the body’’s serotonin levels, which are associated with good feelings. Also, music tends to enhance deep breathing, making a person feel more relaxed. Also, background music at work has been shown to cut stress levels. In addition to causing heart rates to decline, music boosts the body’’s temperature.

One preferable way to relax is to lie down with a set of headphones and allow the music to wash over you. In this way, you”ll be intimately involved in the music you”ll feel as if you are part of the music. It is easy to forget the cares of the world when you can escape into music. You should select music that has a slow beat preferably slower than 72 beats a minute, the standard heart rate.

You should focus your attention to the silence that is usually built into musical selections in order to maximize your relaxation. Another popular technique is to use a Walkman while doing your morning walk. This way, you combine the stress-busting effects of music with those of exercise. This provides a one-two punch which is guaranteed to reduce your stress level.

You might also try tuning into nature sounds. Sit in your backyard, close your eyes, and concentrate on the sounds you hear. You”ll be listening to the music of crickets and songbirds, leaves rustling in the wind and wind chimes swaying in the breeze. You can also purchase a CD which offers the sounds of the ocean or the woods. You”ll be amazed at how quickly you”ll be carried away with the sounds. Just ten minutes sitting quietly and listening can put you in an entirely different frame of mind. You”ll find you”re better able to cope with the demands of the day if you”ve spent some time listening to music whether it’’s man-made or made by nature.

It is highly important that you listen to music that appeals to you. If you never liked the Beach Boys, chances are that playing a Best of the Beach Boys CD will not calm you down. Furthermore, if you like classical music, but can”t stand Beethoven, limit your listening to Mozart instead. The important thing is that you feel comfortable with your musical selections.

It is hard to imagine a world without music, yet most of us do not take full advantage of the art form. It can be unbelievably effective in reducing stress and improving relaxation. It is no wonder that women have been known to select their favorite music to give birth by. Music elevates our mood; it makes us feel happy and alive.Depending on the amount of stress you”re under, you may end up playing music just in the morning, in the afternoon, or all day. Just remember that music time should be relaxation time.

By Christine OKelly

Recent advances in the field of orthodontics have made braces more appealing to the adult patient. In fact, approximately 20 percent of current orthodontics patients are over the age of 21. In the past, many adults shied away from the procedure due to the unsightly appearance of metal braces. Now, Long Island orthodontics specialists provide a variety of options for adults looking for a straighter smile, without compromising their physical appearance for treatment.

As with all medical procedures, it is important to consult with a professional to determine the appropriate course of action for your teeth. Here are three orthodontics innovations that add visual appeal and convenience to adult treatment.

Invisalign Invisible Alignment System

The Invisalign system uses a series of clear mouthpieces to straighten and align teeth. This solution is perfect for Long Island orthodontics candidates, especially adults, because the mouthpieces do not stand out like traditional metal braces do. Adults can maintain a professional, natural look while receiving treatment. The aligners can be taken out to brush and floss, enhancing the overall dental hygiene during treatment. What’’s even better is that the aligners should also be removed for eating and drinking, so patients are not restricted by the foods they can eat.

Patients receive a series of mouthpieces to wear for two weeks at a time. This system only requires orthodontist visits every 8 to 10 weeks, whereas traditional braces require monthly appointments. From beginning to end, the Invisalign process takes approximately 6 to 15 months, also less time than the traditional process. In all, this treatment decreases the hassle and increases the convenience of orthodontics for busy adults. However, the Invisalign system is not for everyone, as it often can only fix minor tooth alignment problems.

LingualCare iBraces

iBraces provide an invisible solution for adults, whose orthodontics needs cannot be corrected by Invisalign. Long Island orthodontists use the hardware of traditional metal braces, such as brackets and wires, to apply iBraces. However, with the iBraces system, a provider of Long Island orthodontics places the aligners on the back of a patient’’s teeth, again maintaining a visually-pleasing smile throughout the course of treatment. Others won”t even be able to see the braces!

This system is also more efficient than traditional braces because the hardware is completely customized for each patient to address specific orthodontic needs. The equipment used for traditional braces is only partially custom-designed for each Long Island orthodontics patient. Additionally, iBraces often can reduce the number of orthodontist appointments throughout the process because they do not require as many wire adjustments as traditional braces. Therefore, this treatment system can also reduce the discomfort of orthodontics and save time for adult patients.

Clear Ceramic Braces

Adult orthodontics patients will also appreciate the natural aesthetic look of clear ceramic braces. Providers of Long Island orthodontics apply this form of treatment in the same way as traditional metal braces, on the front of a patient’’s teeth. However, the natural tooth color of the brackets help these braces blend in to the look of a person’’s smile. Plus, orthodontists use white or clear rubber bands to hold the wire into place on the brackets. On average, a Long Island orthodontics patient completes a traditional braces treatment within 18 to 30 months
